| Always in My Heart (Artists Only!, 2001) Al Campbell is a veteran singer who croons with a confidence developed over his nearly 40 years in the business. His smooth, soulful sound is tailor-made for lovers rock and will appeal to fans of Don Campbell, Benjy Myaz, Peter Hunnigale, and even Luciano ("Love" in particular could certainly find a spot an any of his albums). Always in My Heart is a solid yet unremarkable set that, as indicated by generic titles like "Love," "Oh Jah," "Always in My Heart," and "Live Up," travels well-worn roads, but it does it competently with a mellow, likeable sound full of old-fashioned love songs (including a nice cover of Carl Malcolm's "No Jestering," a song that was covered in the '70s by -- yikes -- Bette Midler) with a touch of roots and an ill-advised stab at dancehall ("Try Jah Love"). "Always in My Heart," "Oh Jah" (both UK hits), "No Jestering," and a cover of his own "No More Running" are choice cuts. Note: the track listing on the album is not in the correct order, in case you're wondering if your ears are playing tricks on you again. Stupid ears. |
