Riddim Come Forward: 50,000 Volts of Trojan Records (Trojan, 2006)

*GUEST REVIEW*
Spooky is well known in trop-hop circles and is an author, professor, producer, and film scorer. Recent collaborations have included Twilight Circus and Dave Lombardo of Slayer fame. His dub pleasure has now been exploited by the Trojan label. Like Madlib's Bomb Shelter project this album will be aimed at the illbient massive for producer status rather than content. Riddim is more thought out that Blunted. Despite the planning, it lacks Madlib's funky trowel. Dub, soul covers, ska, rock steady, roots and two-tone all get a look in, but Spooky seems a little out to sea. This double CD package is a little confused. Is it a mix CD or a compilation? Why not focus on the uncovered gems rather than including the old faves? Disc 2 provides the most pleasant surprises but is let down by the overall quality control.
