Stand Tall (Kontiki, 2003) Award-winning California-based Tongan band Kontiki flashes a smooth sound on their debut Stand Tall that you wouldn't expect from such a burly threesome. This album is a worthy continuation of the rich line of Polynesian reggae releases, with its mellow lovers rock vibe that recalls modern masters like Sanchez and Maxi Priest. There's even the occasional Shaggy-like chat by band member Lucky. Any lack in originality, however, is more than made up for in quality. The tranquil rhythms, emotive vocals, and tender melodies make for a lovers paradise -- even when the subject matter turns a bit darker on "Hatred" and "Painful Memories." For the most part, though, Stand Tall is a mellow mood-setter, something to throw on and groove to all night long. |
