Lovers Rock (Wackies, 1982)

*GUEST REVIEW*
For some reason, I don't seem to own many albums featuring lovers rock. Perhaps I thought it was too twee, poppy, or just lacked a dubby production. Maybe I thought it would resemble the worst traits of popular soul music as portrayed by Theophilus P. Wildebeeste. Despite these misgivings, I eventually got round to purchasing Lovers Rock by The Love Joys, which has been reissued by the Rhythm and Sound boys as part of their Wackies appreciation society. Two cousins from Brixton provide the vocals on this album. Sonia Abel and Claudette Brown provide some great vocals to contrast with the Bullwackies production. The production is dark and haunting on this rootsy album. The tracks meander through the showcase style like a muddy Horace Andy. The vocals seem vaguely familiar in the way that most Wackies tracks do. This is a very decent Wackies release that's only suitable for the heaviest dance floors.
